Ashcombe Dorking Under 18 girls had their first competition of the new season on Sunday 4th October, playing at home. 4 established sides came to Dorking to play in the Gold competition and Ashcombe started strongly beating old time rivals Wessex 2-0, Ashcombe and Wessex were both founded in 1976 and are celebrating 50 years of volleyball this year. In their second match Ashcombe found Wapping Wildcats too strong and slipped to a 0-2 loss. The final game against South Hants also looked lost when the first set was lost 25-14 and then Ashcombe were 18-24 down in the second. Strong and steady serving by Azra Ganal and good team work by captain Gilky Yung and Scarlett Lafe saw Ashcombe fight back to take the second set 27-25. Good serving was again the key with Naz Fidan, Asya Ganal and Rianna Fernandes all playing a strong part. Excellent defensive work by Aily Lam as Libero kept Ashcombe in the game and led to their final success. Final results: Wapping Wildcats 1st, Ashcombe Dorking 2nd, South Hants 3rs, Wessex 4th.
