Young Ashcombe Side See Off Ducks

Surrey Volleyball League
Ladies Division 2
Ashcombe Dorking 1 vs ACS Setting Ducks
Thursday 23rd January
Ashcombe Dorking 1 won 3 – 0 (25-23, 25-20,25-19)

Ashcombe’s young players who make up Ashcombe Dorking 1 came in to this match fresh from their recent success in the Under 16 National Cup. The team have an average age of just 15 however playing in a full adult senior league has helped to develop their game throughout the season and the visit from the Ducks proved to be another test passed ably by the team. Their confidence and team spirit were high and they produced a clinical and efficient performance to defeat a weakened Setting Ducks team in the Ashcombe Volleyball Centre.

The first set was very even with¬† Ashcombe’s Asia Perkins being the pick of the home side whilst Natheli Koide responded well for the Ducks. The points ebbed and flowed with Ashcombe finishing the set with a magnificent flourish.

The second set saw a strong contribution from Ashcombe Captain Rachel Higgins. The 15 year old continued her excellent vein of form this season which has already seen her represent Ashcombe’s elite Super 8 team in the top division of the National Volleyball League as well as a call up to the England Cadet Training Squad. In this set she won an incredible twelve straight points on her serve varying their speed, length and placement with a maturity far beyond her young age. As ever she was well supported by Katy Begley at the net and by Lydia Goodwin also proving to be a strong force. Ashcombe controlled the set from beginning to end with Ailsa McDonald, Maddie Nutt and Edie Adams all making valuable contributions.

Ashcombe sensed victory and increased their tempo in the third set. Full credit must be given to the Ducks for retaliating and threatening the Dorking team’s defence but Ashcombe’s Katy Begley put the set beyond doubt with a combination of deft net plays and power serving.

Overall a fine performance from Ashcombe and one they can take a great deal from as well as the three competition points.

Ashcombe Dorking 1: R Higgins (Capt) , L Goodwin, A Perkins, M Nutt, A McDonald, K Begley and E Adams. Coach: L Thomas.
