Two succesive victories for AD2 in NVL 2

During their second match of the new year, AD1 sought to continue their winning streak against 9th-placed Southampton VC.  After their 3-1 victory over Sussex Dolphins 1 and Shield victory over Milton Keynes the team was ready for another victory. However, Ashcombe started the first set without their usual conviction and allowed a tenacious Southampton to take the lead. After some stern words from both captain and coach, AD1 finally regained their stride. The team made use of their usual varied play to turn the tide and grab a comfortable first set victory: 25-19. During the second set, Southampton came back strong owing to their powerful outside hitter, Julia Thompson. Ashcombe’s block were unable to cope with her cannonballs, and this attacking pressure caused a flurry of personal errors on the home side. Eventually, adept passing and defence by Willis and Gernler, and captain Rossi’s strong serves put AD1 back in the lead. Ashcombe narrowly snatched the second set 25-22. The third set saw Ashcombe make better use of their middle hitters to scatter Southampton’s defence. This put Thompson out of play and allowed Ashcombe to take and keep the lead for another 25-19 set win. After their latest victory, Ashcombe maintain their 5th place in the league, with a view of climbing up to 3rd spot. Their next match will be the National Shield Quarter Final, held at Ashcombe Volleyball Centre on the 27th of January.
