Emilia Vakeva-Baird from Ashcombe VC and The Ashcombe School was selected for the England girls Under 17 Squad as they made history as they won a silver medal at the NEVZA U17 Championships – a record finish for an England team in NEVZA competition.

A fantastic performance in the semi-final saw the England girls overcome the Faroe Islands. That saw England reach a first ever NEVZA final and guarantee a silver medal.

The final didn’t go the way England wanted, as they faced hosts Denmark. The Danes took the first set but England fought back to win a tight second set. They had trailed throughout the set but England showed dogged determination and quality to overturn the deficit and take the set. The Danes were not to be denied and took the next two sets and the title. It was always destined to be a tense final, as England had already beaten the Danes in the pool stage.
