Ashcombe Dorking 1 v Spelthorne Jaguars
The young Ashcombe team needed to pull on all their reserves to compete against this experienced women’s team. A Surrey League match against Spelthorne Jaguars, a multi-national team full of experienced players is just what the team needed to help prepare for their Under 16 Championship campaign. Captained by Ashcombe School student Rachel Higgins the team were trying a new system of attack and once the team settled into position it was a successful trial. England Cadet pair Katy Begley and Lydia Goodwin were dominant at the net allowing the team to feel confident in passing and defence along with Ailsa McDonald and Rachel Higgins taking on the roles of setters with relish. The final score was 3-1 to Ashcombe Dorking. The next challenge for the side is the first round of the National Under 16 Championships on 30th Novemberat Newbury, Berkshire, where they play the hosts, Academy of Beach Sports Croyde and Taunton. The top two teams will then play in a 4 way tournament at Wessex, Bournemouth on 18th January to gain a place in the National last 8 competition.
Elsewhere Ashcombe Dorking 2 found the competition against Dorking Diamonds too tough for their first match in the Surrey League. The Ashcombe team, many of them under 14 were beaten by good serving and consistent hitting by the more experienced Dorking team. Debut performances by Illona McDonald and the impressive Izzy Russell, both 13, showed that the team has great promise and look forward to the rest of their Surrey League fixtures.
