Juniors from Ashcombe Volleyball Club represent the South East at Inter-Regional Tournament.
Junior players from Ashcombe Volleyball Club represented the South East Region at the Volleyball England Inter-Regional Championships held at the Sportsdock which is part of The University of East London in Docklands.
Ashcombe had seven representatives in the Under 16 Girls team- Edie Adams, Ailsa McDonald, Asia Perkins, Maddy Nutt, Rachel Higgins, Katy Begley and Lydia Goodwin. Rachel Higgins from the Ashcombe School was named as Captain. They lost 2-1 to East and 2-0 to London in their first round of matches. In the second round The South East beat East 2-1 and Yorkshire 2-1 and then lost to South West. They then faced a playoff to determine the final placings against Yorkshire which they won to finish as 5th in England overall.
Ashcombe player Dominic Wisdom played for South East under 17 boys as they beat Yorkshire and lost to London on the first day of competition before a mixed final day saw them finish 5th overall.
Ashcombe also had five players picked for the Under 14 girls team. Gillian Quinn, Amy Antonio, Katie Lay, Illona McDonald and Issy Russell all featured as the team played 6 games losing 4 of them 2-1 and losing the other two 2-0. The team learned a lot and as three of them are under 13 will still be playing in this age group next year. Under 14 Coaches Robyn Wisdom and Daisy Haynes are both products of the Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s coaching development programme and were in their last year coaching at inter-regional level before moving to Exeter and Bournemouth Universities respectively.
Ashcombe Coach and Secretary of the South East Volleyball Association Freda Bussey commented ‘We are very proud of all our players who have earned representative honours this weekend, this sees the culmination of a year-long training programme with the players attending monthly training sessions and development camps.’
