Good performance by Ashcombe at Under 18 National Championships

Ashcombe Under 18 squad put in a very good performance at the National Under 18 Volleyball Championships on Saturday 18th January, hosted by Black Country in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire. 9 players were in the squad; Agata Rychlik, Gill Quinn, Peanut Meekings, Hattie Breaden, Berni Soti, Abbey Head, Emilia Vakeva-Baird, Divya Kartik and Deborah Bona. Coached by Freda Bussey and Captained by Gill Quinn the team started with a fine 2-0 victory over Newcastle Staffs. Losing their second game to Wales Junior Academy showed the young Ashcombe team that real teamwork was needed to progress in the competition. The final match against Black Country, who had already beaten both Wales and Newcastle, was to prove Ashcombe’s ability to play at this level. Steady serving and passing were essential and Ashcombe were able to keep Black Country in their sights, losing the first set but winning the second. The third set was close, with each team taking and losing the lead. The final score of 16-14 to Black Country made the the winners of the overall competition. Ashcombe could still go through in second place but this relied on Wales losing to Newcastle Staffs in their final match. Wales played some of their best volleyball on the day and beat Newcastle to take their place in the last 8 competition on Sunday 8th March 2020 in Kettering.
