Dorking Diamonds Vs. Ashcombe Dorking 2

Dorking Diamonds won 3-0 (25- 8, 25-9, 25-12)

A young Ashcombe Dorking 2 side with an average age of just 14 took to the court against a more experienced and organised Dorking Diamonds side however the performance showed what this team will be capable of in the future.

A strong run of serves from Dorking’s Tess Davidson got the Diamonds off to a flying start. Ashcombe showed good spirit by chasing down several wild balls that many other teams would have left be. Edie Adams provided some consistent setting for Ashcombe which was backed up by some excellent work at the net from Emily Hill making her first appearance for Ashcombe. Another run of serves from Davidson saw the set fall to Diamonds 25-8.

Ashcombe worked well as a team in the second set with strong hitting from both Olwyn Brignall and Brianna McLaughlin giving Ashcombe some momentum however Dorking’s Kelly Young’s fine hitting and serving Dorking to take the second set.

In the third set Ashcombe came out fighting through the powerful serve of Illona McDonald which was then backed up with aces from Brianna McLaughlin and Olwyn Brignall. Hill once again continued her great game with some defensive skill in passing many balls to turn defence into attack. Captain Freya McDonald showed a fine example with consistent passing and determination however Ashcombe couldn’t match the powerful hitting and blocking from Diamonds’ Lowe which was enough for Diamonds to take the match.

The majority of this side will represent Ashcombe next weekend in Round 1 of the Volleyball England Under 15 national championships where they take on Southampton and Cherwell.

Coach Tim Griffiths, commenting on the match said ‘Although we lost to a strong Dorking Diamonds side who played well, I am proud of all my team in how they coped with the challenge they faced today. This performance will stand us in good stead for next weekend and the future.’
