Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s Under 15 team produce strong showing in final tournament of 2014.
An Under 15 team from Ashcombe Volleyball Club travelled to Earnest Bevin School in South London to compete in a friendly tournament against other teams from that age group.
In their first game against the hosts Ashcombe started strongly and dominated for much of the first set but were pipped at the close to lose 25-23. This didn’t perturb Ashcombe as Freya McDonald, Edie Adams, llona McDonald and Gillian Quinn served with power and guile to win 25-7.
Ashcombe then took the better of a close final set to win 15-13.
In the second game against Essex based Boswells Blaze Ashcombe started strongly in but found themselves stuck against a strong server who pulled Boswells level and then pulled away from Ashcombe despite a late rally as the set finished 25-18 to Boswells.
Ashcombe then dipped in the second set as their confidence faltered which resulted in several lost serves and the previously noisy Ashcombe side were silenced. Boswells took the set 25-16 and the match 2-0.
Overall this was performance from the young Ashcombe team that showed plenty of promise with Molly Fownes-Walpole blocking well at the net, setters Sophie Bushe and Edie Adams intelligently tipping second balls into space and solid service and passing from Gillian Quinn and Illona McDonald with Freya McDonald starring with hits from back-court.
