Ashcombe Volleyball Club through to National Shield Final
A five set thriller at the Ashcombe Volleyball Centre saw Ashcombe come away as victors to progress into the Volleyball England National Shield final having defeated Birmingham Volleyball Club. This was a fantastic win for Ashcombe as they fought back from two sets down and defended a match point in the forth set.
Ashcombe started steadily but hitting and serving errors cost the team the first 2 sets 25-21 and 25-19. Zuzanna Resetarova and Katy Begley remained dominant in the middle but coach James Clow brought Pat Willis and Anri Saso off the bench to steady the passing and changed the attack line up giving setter Karen Rossi all options at the net.
The third set was taken by Ashcombe 25-19 with Libero Evelyn Potocnik passing accurately to stabilise the defence and built a strong platform for the Ashcombe attack. In the fourth set points were traded and with the set score at 24-23 Ashcombe faced defeat with match point to Birmingham. Nerves were steadied when Dierdre Wilson drilled her attack home and then served to take the set.
The deciding fifth set showed Ashcombe at their most determined. Fired by the support of Dorking VC and Friends Life volleyball club, who were getting ready for a Surrey League match at the centre, Katy Begley served seven deceptive float serves giving Ashcombe the confidence to close out set the game 15-8.
Ashcombe Head Coach James Clow said “This game was a real treat for the watching crowd. Ashcombe came back from the brink of defeat boosted by the support of the local fans. They played some of their best volleyball when under pressure from the Birmingham athletes. Thanks must go to the crowd whose partisan cheering kept our spirits high.”
Ashcombe will now travel to the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering on 28th March to face Chester Amazons who defeated North Riding Eagles 3-1 in the other Semi-Final.
