Ashcombe Return Empty Handed From Weekends Travels.
Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s first team Ashcombe Dorking 1 faced two fixtures this weekend, one in the cup and one in the league and returned to Dorking empty handed.
Injuries, holidays and the Under 18 cup competition had conspired to leave Ashcombe with just 6 fit and available players for each match.
First they faced Bristol in the league on Saturday and showed some promise keeping level with the home team to 15 all in the first set. However some deep serves coupled with some poor service from Ashcombe led to Bristol taking the first set 25-17. The home side capitalised on the momentum from this first set forcing Ashcombe to make unforced errors and hitting straight into a well set block, meaning they won the remaining two sets 25-14 and 25-10. Ashcombe’s Carol Fogarty finished the game as Most Valuable Player (MVP).
On Sunday Ashcombe travelled to Oxford in the second round of the Volleyball England National Cup. Celine Rudd was a late call up for Ashcombe to replace the injured SaSo Anri. Karen Rossi replaced Carol Fogarty at setter and Agnes Abraham came back into the side after her back injury. Intially both teams were very closely matched with Oxford presenting a strong middle hitter and equally effective outside attack. In the initial phases Ashcombe were very strong however they lost control of the net and lost out on the first set 26-24. Agnes Abraham put together a good run of service which wrestled the second set to Ashcombe 25-19. Ashcombe proved to be their own worst enemies in the third stanza by doing the hard work but then losing out on a simple pass or free-ball. In the forth set Oxford were strong once again before Ashcombe rallied back from 21-15 down to level at 23-23 before some Oxford luck saw them take the set and match.
Head Coach James Clow was pleased with his makeshift team but remained frustrated by the two results. ‘If we put the effort in we can improve quickly and get to our potential. I’m looking forward to a home game next weekend after so many away games and the luxury of having a full squad to choose from.’
Ashcombe return to the Ashcombe Volleyball Centre to face Sheffield in the National Volleyball League on Sunday 16 November.
