Ashcombe Prepare for Final Showdown with Amazons


Ashcombe Volleyball Club will travel to the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering on Saturday 28th March to play in the Volleyball England National Shield Final against the Chester Amazons.


Ashcombe have no injury concerns but will be without England Cadets Katy Begley and Rachel Higgins who are both on educational visits as part of their A level courses and setter Karen Rossi who is unavailable due to work commitments. The Ashcombe squad features 17 year-old England Cadet Lydia Goodwin from Dorking who will vie for a starting spot in a strong hitting line.


This is not Ashcombe’s first visit to Kettering having appeared many national finals in their 39 year history, with the Dorking club last making the final of the National Under 18 cup in 2012. Ashcombe’s route to the final has seen them take on Oxford, Coventry and Warwick Riga, Dartford before defeating Birmingham Volleyball Club in a thrilling 5 set Semi-Final 3 sets to 2.


Chester are the lower of the two sides as they currently sit 4th in National Volleyball League Women’s 3 North however Ashcombe will be at pains not to underestimate their opposition as they defeated higher ranked North Riding Eagles in their semi-final to secure their place in the Kettering showpiece. This was Chester’s forth trip to Yorkshire having faced University of York 2nds, York Volleyball club and the University of York 1sts on their interesting journey to Kettering.


Chester’s Most Valuable player is the strong serving Jana De Brandt who has 4 MVP nominations so far this season. They are coached by Lenny Barry who is well known to many on the Volleyball circuit having been a member of the Volleyball England Competition Commission for many years.


The Women’s Shield final comes in the middle of a packed weekend of Volleyball with eight trophies up for grabs over the course of the weekend. The National Cup Finals weekend is the showcase event for Volleyball England and one of the key events in the Volleyball Calendar. Over 200 teams compete in various cup competitions throughout the season, all vying for the chance to play in this prestigious event.
