Ashcombe Power Past Portsmouth for another National Volleyball League Win.

Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s Ashcombe Dorking 1 took little over an hour to dispatch Portsmouth in National Volleyball League One, winning in three sets. The powerful hitting provided by the Dorking Side, in particular by Katy Begley and Agnes Abraham gave the visitors little chance to get into the game.

Head Coach James Clow was forced to make some changes from the previous win against Dartford in the National Shield with Deirdre Wilson (Illness) and Natalia Skachkova (Concussion) both unavailable.

Ashcombe came out in determined mood in the first set, with the setting of Karen Rossi providing a fantastic platform for her hitters to attack off. Under 18 players Lydia Goodwin and Rachel Higgins gave Ashcombe dynamism and both were electric in attack and through the backline. Ashcombe provided a solid defence throughout to back their attacking excellence and won the set 25-21.

The second set saw Ashcombe surge into a lead again with Agnes Abraham providing quality serves and sharp hitting to give her side the advantage. Despite a solid block from Begley and Higgins, Portsmouth came back into the game with some intelligent play, however Ashcombe held on to win 25-23.

Carol Fogarty took over the setting duties in the third set and quickly brought her experience to bear. This allowed Katy Begley to really show her quality as she sent hits all around the court to which Portsmouth could have little answer. Portsmouth were soon broken by the Ashcombe spirit as they took the set 25-18, and with it the match.

Coach Clow was ‘extremely pleased’ by the win and looked forward to the sides next fixture against top of the table Tendring.
