Volleyball England National Cup – Second Round –
Ashcombe Dorking vs Tendring
Ashcombe won 3 – 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18)

Some Ashcombe pyrotechnics lit up the Surrey skyline as the Super 8 team found their form in this round two encounter with Tendring Volleyball Club.

After a frustrating start to the season, captain Carol Fogarty led the Ashcombe team to a 3 – 0 victory in a convincing and efficient manner, overcoming a determined opposition who shone above their position two leagues below the Dorking based side.

Ashcombe started with great self-belief and self-confidence and were able to relax into the tie and enjoy their volleyball which was reflected in the scoring as they raced to a 16 – 10 lead. The joint experience of Michelle Conway and Carol Fogarty inspired their team-mates with Agnes Abraham and Mia Lowney doing much to impress. Kim Kieselbach produced some fantastic front court play to shut out the Essex sides attack. Try as they might, Tendring could not breach the Ashcombe defence and the set was won 25 – 22 by the Dorking based team.

Set two saw Ashcombe’s Monika Gmuca play her best volleyball since joining the club in the close season as she blocked well and hit fierce, unreturnable spikes. Team-mates Kim Kieselbach and Nicky Schmidt joined her at the net to thwart the opposition attacks and the set closed at 25 – 20 to Ashcombe.

Despite a slow start to the third set, Ashcombe finally found their gears and upshifted in an impressive manner, taking a 16 – 14 lead thanks, in no small measure, to the defensive skills of Evelin Potocnik and the ever-dependable duo of Conway and Fogarty. Ashcombe soon smelt victory and went for the kill, closing the set, and the match, 25 – 18.

Ashcombe Super 8 Manager Robin Martin praised the performance of each and every player as they came through a troubled start to the season to flourish in this cup encounter.  Robin also took the opportunity to thank the team’s loyal supporters, in particular the youngsters, who proudly unfurled a home-made banner. How proud the team are of such support.
