Ashcombe Dorking II begin National Volleyball League Campaign with first Double Header.
Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s second team began their National Volleyball League Division 3 South campaign with two away games this weekend held in Southampton. The young team featuring a majority of players who had come through the Ashcombe Youth Development system played their first fixtures at this level under coach Gordon Scott. 8 players were making their National Volleyball League Debuts and the squad included 9 players under the age of 17.
First up were Cardiff Celts where a slow start from Ashcombe saw Cardiff take the first two sets 25-23 and 25-16. Ashcombe soon rallied thanks to consistent and effective play from Nuphat Willis, making her Ashcombe debut ably backed up by the strong hitting of 16 year old Asia Perkins. Ashcombe then went on to take the remaining sets 25-22, 25-20 and the deciding fifth 15-9 to defeat the Welsh side.
In the second match against hosts Team Solent, Ashcombe took the first set thanks to reliable serving from Natalia Skachkova. Asia Perkins again hit well down the line to keep Ashcombe competitive however as the match wore on the young Ashcombe team began to tire which gave Team Solent the opportunity to build up a lead, going on to take the match by three sets to one.
Over the course of both games, Willis had produced the most consistent and reliable performance to shine as Ashcombe’s best player on the day.
The results leaves Ashcombe II second in the NVL Women’s Division 3 South after 2 games, their next matches will see them play Solent once again and Farnborough Devils on the 5th October.
