Another good performance from Ashcombe secures Division 1 place for 2015/16

Ashcombe Volleyball Club’s first team Ashcombe Dorking 1 won beat Tameside Volleyball Club to clinch survival in National Volleyball League Division 1 for next season.

Ashcombe came out slowly in the first set and found themselves 7-1 behind before warming up to the task at hand. Agnes Abraham and Katy Begley provided some powerful serving to claw their way back into the contest. England Cadet Rachel Higgins once again proved her versatility by taking over as Libero for the injured Evelin Potonik halfway through the first set. Higgins played extremely well despite being thrust into the role for the rest of the fixture.

Karen Rossi began in the setting role for Ashcombe and found her middle hitters well. Rossi was ably assisted by Katy Begley in the front court who provided a fearsome attack and brave blocking to control the net. Natalia Skachkocva and Louisa Lm also alternated through the right sided hitting position with great success. Ashcombe took the first set 25-23.

The second set proved to be a scrappy affair however a solid defensive platform from Ashcombe, led by Libero Rachel Higgins kept Ashcombe close to Tameside at all times. Tameside had improved significantly from their first set showing but could not penetrate the Dorking-side’s defence as Ashcombe ground out a 25-22 win for their second set.

In the third set, Ashcombe lead from the off however the mancunians would not let them pull away in what became a real battle with both sides trading blows and struggling to finish the ball. Tameside took a slight advantage and the set looked to be heading their way however Ashcombe remained resolute in defence to hold out. After a marathon nail biter at match point, Karen Rossi dumped the ball into the left corner to clinch the set, and the match 33-31, much to the relief of all onlookers.

Agnes Abraham was named as Most Valuable Player for her fine serve and all round attack play throughout the match.

Ashcombe Head Coach James Clow was delighted with the win and looked forward to the rest of the season ahead. ‘This was a great win against one of Ashcombe’s traditional rivals in Tameside. Our team is improving with every match and we proved that we now have the talent and depth in the squad to challenge anyone in the league. The challenge is finding the right combination of players as we push on.’

More good news came for the club this week as Ashcombe Dorking 1’s ranks have been bolstered by the signing of Deirdre Willson. Wilson comes to the Dorking club having played in the American College NCAA competition representing Wheaton College, Massachusetts. She plays as a setter or outsider hitter and her quality and experience will provide a fillip for the Ashcombe side as they push towards the playoffs and face their quarter final of the Volleyball England national shield competition against Dartford on 1st February.
