Positive Performance Concludes Ashcombe Season
Ashcombe played their final home game in the National Volleyball League Super8 division this season on Saturday 15th March and gave a spirited performance against 4th placed team Swiss Cottage from London.
Coach James Clow lead his first super 8 game and the match also saw the return of setter Carol Fogarty. Both she and Karen Rossi gave excellent performances to allow the team to attack with confidence. Middle players Monica Gmuka and Claire Greenwood were successful offering fast attack options and also limited the Swiss Cottage attack by blocking effectively and strongly.
18 year old Evelin Potocnik performed faultlessly yet again as Libero and allowed the Ashcombe side to keep competitive through long rallies. Agnes Abraham and Basirat Mamman shared the opposite role and the first set saw the team play some of the best volleyball of the season and the scores were close until Swiss Cottage pulled away with some powerful attacks to win the set 25-16.
The second set followed in the same pattern with Michelle Conway showing why she has been named Super 8 player of the year. Hitting through position 4, she was dominant at the net and with back court attacks. Again Swiss Cottage pulled away with powerful serving and blocking and took the set 25-16.
Ashcombe seemed to lose their way in set 3 and Swiss Cottage powered their way to victory taking the third set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Ashcombe Dorking have had a tough season in the Super 8’s and will drop to NVL Division 1 for next season but with a fast developing youth squad the club is confident it will continue to thrive.
